Oat Flour – Replacement for Flour

Here is a Gobbytraveller Tip…

So during the Covid-19 pandemic, the one item consistently missing from supermarket shelves was flour (all and any type of flour). It turns out, everyone, myself included, decided to channel their inner Mary Berry and try their hand at baking. Fortunately, I had a couple of bags of all-purpose flour in my cupboard when the lockdown started in the UK but as I entered into the fourth week, my supplies were fast depleting.

I was super keen to jump onto that banana bread bandwagon which had taken the nation by storm (or I bought way too many banana on my last shop and the bananas were well past their prime, so desperate times calls for desperate measures.

I looked online to see what alternatives I could use and stumbled across Oat Flour. Oat Flour is great for banana bread, pancakes, waffles and muffins (see my other posts for these recipes).

What is Oat Flour?

Well it turns out Oat Flour is simply blended rolled oats. Oats are very soft and grind quite quickly and uniformly in a food processor. Oat Flour can also be used alone or in combination with other flours to give added flavour or a nutritional boost.

How to make Oat Flour?

It is super simple – it just requires the following:

  1. blender; and
  2. oats.

Approximately – 3 to 5 minutes or so (depending on the speed and power of your food processor)

Proportions are super east to remember too – 1 & 1/4 cup of oats makes approximately 1 cup of oat flour.

  1. Place oats in the food processor.
  2. Blend the oats until they are ground into a powder-like consistency.
  3. Stir to ensure that all the oats have been finely ground.

You can store any excess oat flour in an air-tight container.

Enjoy!
